What Are Cataracts?

Eye cataracts are one of the main causes of blindness and often develop over months or years. The lens of the eye is usually clear, but a cataract often results in blurry vision. Although eye cataracts are common in patients above 40 years of age, children may sometimes develop early cataracts due to genetic reasons or metabolic imbalances.

Under normal circumstances, light passes through the natural eye lens, located right behind the colored part (called the iris). When a cataract clouds the eye lens, the eye is no longer able to focus light correctly, and as a result, we’re unable to see objects clearly.

The size of the cataract determines the degree to which the vision is affected. For example, large cataracts can cause acute clouding of vision and interfere with your ability to cope with daily chores. Some patients may have multiple cataracts or develop cataracts in both eyes simultaneously or at different times.

Causes of Eye Cataracts

Although the exact cause of eye cataracts is not known, the following factors are known to increase the risk of developing cataracts:

  • U-V Exposure
  • Smoking
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Previous eye surgeries
  • Family history
  • Excessive consumption of alcohol

Increasing your intake of vitamin E, vitamin C, and Omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce the risks of developing cataracts. We also recommend wearing dark glasses that block UV rays from the sun.
